The Storage Heaven Mirage ML280 disk-based virtual tape library (VTL) solutions target the growing need of Small to Medium Businesses (SMB) to more efficiently protect critical business data. The ML280 utilizes cost effective disk technology to deliver high performance reliable virtual tape solutions.
The ML280 uses existing tape backup software and procedures to record “virtual tape cartridges” on a SCSI interface RAID system. The ML280 is seen by the backup software as a conventional tape library, but provides reliable high performance backup and quick restores typical of RAID systems. The VTL system is scalable and can grow to meet future requirements by attaching up to a total of eight SCSI RAID systems to the existing ML280.
The ML280 delivers immediate improvements to backup and restore applications with a sustained speed of over 500GB per hour. The ML280 virtual tape library supports up to four virtual tape drives simultaneously, allowing up to four backup streams to run concurrently.
The ML280 VTL engine automatically emulates the attached SCSI tape drive or library that is connected to the archive port as well as built-in emulations. ML280 “virtual tape cartridges” are configured to match the size and format of the tape cartridges in the attached physical drive or library. The ML280 controller’s Embedded Archive Engine (EAE) automatically copies the “virtual tape cartridges” to the physical drive at tape streaming speeds as an independent, server-free, background task. Copying, in this high speed streaming mode, minimizes wear (shoe shining) on the tape drive. Backup software can perform backup and restore requests instantly using the ML280 VTL, while off-site tapes are still being copied by the EAE.
The ML280 VTL employs cost effective, reliable disk technology to improve backup and restore speed, reliability and productivity with a smaller less complex footprint.
