The mission critical Mirage Virtual Tape Data Recorder (MDR) for oil and gas industry comes in a four-bay tower or 2U rack mount form factor. Each MDR includes virtual tape controller engine, one archive to tape port and two disk modules with either a 146, 300, or 750 Gigabytes removable drive. The high-volume disks also permit companies to store more data on a single volume: a single removable disk is equivalent to up to 70 tape cartridges. Each drive can be configured to accept 10 to 70 IBM 3590 tapes, or up to 7 LTO-format tape cartridges.

Mirage Virtual Tape Data Recorder

Overview
Mirage Virtual Tape Subsystem For Seismic Data Acquisition
The Mirage Virtual Tape Recorder (MDR) is the first Removable Disk Module (RDM) virtual tape controller designed specifically for use with Seismic data acquisition systems. The IBM3590 tape drive and cartridge is replaced with a SCSI disk drive in a removable canister, providing better performance and superior reliability for recording data in the field. A second RDM can be added to the The Mirage controller in a RAID 1 configuration to provide additional fault tolerant protection against data loss. If a disk drive should fail, the remaining operational drive will continue to record the data.

Transparent operation - MDR is a precise emulation of the IBM3590 tape drive so no operational changes are required on the UL or XL systems. All tape functions are available including playback and repositioning to the last record. In addition MDR is compatible with both the Promax and Apex processing systems. The RDM can be taken from a MDR field acquisition system and inserted in another MDR attached to a processing system so data can be processed directly from the disk.

RDM Capacity - Each SCSI disk is enclosed in a rugged removable canister rated at 25,000 insertions. The data on the disk is recorded in actual tape format. Each RDM can be configured as 10 individual IBM3590-B tape cartridges or 1 "super" IBM3590 cartridge of 95GB. Configuration of the RDM and individual cartridge selection is from the front panel.

Industry Standard Archive - The RDM is recorded in tape format and MDR is designed to archive from the RDM to IBM3590, Fujitsu M8100 or IBM3580 tape drives as a stand alone function. This results in a tape cartridge that is 100% compatible with a corresponding drive connected directly to an appropriate processing system.

RDM Data Protection - Operator safety checks have been programmed into the MDR to help protect the data from accidental erasure. In order to erase an RDM volume the operator must archive that volume to a physical tape and then verify the data. Only at the end of a successful verification is the operator given the option to erase an RDM volume. If an RDM has multiple volumes, all of the individual volumes must be blank before the RDM can be reconfigured. If the RDM's are mirrored, the two individual copies are locked together by a randomly generated RDM ID number to provide protection for both volumes.
